Solar Delivers New Climate Optimism This Earth Day Thursday
art 3

Earth Week 2023 marks a significant shift as Americans celebrate with a comprehensive clean energy plan for the first time. The growing U.S. solar and storage industry suggests the nation’s clean energy goals are now achievable. Even though the electric power sector remains a substantial contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., notable changes are underway. Carbon-free solar energy is now America’s fastest-growing power source. In the previous year, half of all new electric capacity originated from solar, with a record 700,000 homeowners installing solar on their rooftops. The U.S. now boasts over 142 gigawatts of installed solar capacity, displacing 161 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually, akin to removing 35 million vehicles from the roads.

However, the future of clean energy in America faces potential setbacks. Lawmakers are attempting to overturn the two-year pause on new solar tariffs imposed by the Biden Administration, a move that could impose over $1 billion in retroactive duties on solar companies. This change could thwart the progress of the solar and storage industry by eliminating 30,000 jobs and increasing CO2 emissions by 24 million metric tons. Despite these challenges, the solar industry’s expansion signals a positive trend in transitioning to a cleaner, more sustainable energy infrastructure. The Inflation Reduction Act is catalyzing new investments in solar manufacturing and deployment, with projections showing a fivefold increase in installed solar by 2032, offsetting 492 million metric tons of CO2 annually.

As America continues to advance in clean energy initiatives, the Inflation Reduction Act is anticipated to significantly reduce fossil fuel pollution, potentially preventing up to 3,900 premature deaths and up to 100,000 asthma attacks every year by 2030. This progress, although promising, underscores the imperative of continued and robust clean energy deployment. The solar-powered future promises not only a reduction in carbon emissions but also a substantial decrease in air and water pollution, significantly benefiting public health, especially in communities disproportionately affected by pollution from fossil fuel power plants.
